You Need to Change Your Pillow...and Here's Why

Stop. When’s the last time you replaced your pillow? Not the pillowcase, the pillow.

If you’re like the millions of Americans that purchase bedding every year, chances are you haven’t given any thought to your pillow in a long time. That’s a HUGE mistake!

Why should I replace my pillow?

Think about it. Every night you spend anywhere between 7 and 10 hours with your face pressed into a pillow. From your head and face comes hair, dead skin, and oil that seeps and settles into the fabric of your pillow. Every night that you lay back down is another night that this buildup sits on your skin. This can cause acne and other skin conditions to appear or grow worse.

On top of the hair, dead skin, and oil, the material of your pillow naturally attracts tiny critters called dust mites. These little mites, while not harmful, live on your pillow, eating the dead skin and dust that’s left behind, aggravating your allergies in the process. If that’s not a good reason to ditch that decades-old pillow, I don’t know what is.

Ok, ok, you’ve convinced me that I shouldn’t keep pillows forever. What are the signs I should change it?

I’m glad you asked! There are several signs you can look for. If your pillow starts to emit an odor, becomes lumpy or flat, or you’re having trouble sleeping, this is a huge red flag. Also, if you examine your pillow and notice some stains you can’t explain, toss it. Even if you wash your pillow, the filling inside is guaranteed to breakdown over time.

How often should I change it?

Well, that depends on your pillow, but generally, you want to replace them every 1 to 2 years. I know, that seems excessive. But think about it this way: I just told you all the little nasties that live on your pillow, as well as how your pillow breaks down and falls apart, no longer supporting you. The way you sleep is vital to your overall health, so why wouldn’t you want to make sure your pillow is up to snuff?

1 to 2 years still seems excessive. Is there any way to get my pillow to last longer?

It’s simple: Choose the right pillow!

Look at the labels on your pillows closely. You want a pillow that’s not only supportive but is anti-bacterial and hypoallergenic. This will preserve the life of your pillow and keep away nasty dust mites, dead skin, oil, and other allergens. It’s also vital that your pillow be free from toxic chemicals like flame retardants and Formaldehyde, which is incredibly common in pillows.
