5 Mindful Tips for Washing Your Bedding
Looking for more efficient ways to do your laundry? Every conscious choice, no matter how small, is a step in the right direction. Check out our five mindful tips for when you need to wash your bedding!
Where do I begin?
Start with the basics. How much do you truly know about your bedding? If you need a refresher, check out our guide on bed coverings that tells all on everything from duvet covers to mattress protectors. Then take a look at what’s currently in your home.
Check the ingredient labels of your detergents and laundry supplies. Do they contain harsh chemical compounds or artificial additives? If they do, you’ve come to the right blog. You will need mindful alternatives to not only treat the planet right but your bedding, too.
Are you using cotton bedding still? It might be a popular choice, but it’s definitely not the mindful option. Cotton production requires an excessive amount of water, energy, and chemicals. You’ll need to make the switch to bamboo viscose blended bedding if you want to have a more mindful home.

Did you also know that Bamboo is one of the fastest-growing renewable sources on the planet and uses less water than cotton? If you’re looking for more mindful bedding options, our Cosy House Luxury Bed Sheets are just the thing. Not only are they seriously soft, but our sheets are made with a moisture-wicking and hypoallergenic bamboo viscose blend, keeping your sheets cleaner for longer, meaning fewer trips to the washing machine and less energy used. Old traditional cotton sheets are a thing of the past!
2. Dryer Balls over Dryer Sheets
The biggest no-no when washing your bedding isn’t mixing the colors with the whites - it’s using dryer sheets. It’s time to think green when you clean.
The problem with most dryer sheets on the market today is that they contain harsh chemicals and dyes that can be extremely harmful, just like most detergents. They’re neither gentle on bedding nor the environment. No need to fret, though. We’ve got you covered here, too.
You need Cosy House All Natural Wool Dryer Balls to get the job done. C’mon - who needs one-time-use fabric softeners when there are Cosy House Dryer Balls in the house? Our Wool Dryer Balls are sourced from humanely sheared New Zealand sheep, hand-felted, biodegradable, and free of dyes, chemicals, and fragrances. They reduce static, wrinkling, tangling, and drying time by 30%, meaning less energy is used. Plus, our Wool Dryer Balls last for up to 3 years, which is the equivalent of about 1,000 loads of laundry.
3. Cold Washing
You should be washing your bed sheets, mattress, pillow cases, duvets, bed skirts, throw blankets, and any other bedding you use. Make sure you read the cleaning instructions on your linens before you wash them. If you need a little extra help, check out our guide for caring for your bedding. If you want to prolong the life of your sheets and coverings, cold water might be just the trick. Excessive heat can cause damage to your bedding, such as shrinking and fading. Plus, about 90% of the energy your washing machine uses goes toward heating the water [1]. That means cold water can save energy, save your bedding, and save the environment [1].
4. The Bigger the Load, the Better
If you’re washing your bedding one at a time, you’re using up more energy than necessary. You’ll want to start maxing out your loads. You can toss in your white shirts with your white bed sheets. If you have colored bedding, wash them with colored clothes. Don’t opt for more trips to the washer and more energy consumption - opt for conversation instead. A mindful home is a happy home!
5. Air Drying over Tumble Drying
Want to use even less energy? Instead of using your tumble dryer, set up a washing line outside in the yard and use some clothespins to hang your bedding out to dry. There’s nothing quite like the natural scent of the clean, refreshing outdoor air. If it’s a windy day, that’s great! Your bedding will dry even faster.
If it’s raining, though, make sure to clean out the lint trap of your tumble dryer - a clean lint trap can let the hot air in your dryer flow more efficiently, dry your bedding faster, and use up less energy.
Happy Washing!
