Everything You Need to Know About Bed Coverings

Everything You Need to Know About Bed Coverings

Bedding [ bediNG ] noun:

“Coverings for a bed, such as sheets and blankets. Also known as bed clothes or bed linen.”

When you are making your bed, it will usually consist of a flat sheet or fitted bed sheet, a flat top sheet, a blanket, quilt, or duvet, and a few fluffy pillows. But there’s more to bed coverings than that. Did you know that you can layer with things like throws or bed scarves? Do you know what the difference between a bedspread and a coverlet is? If you’re not sure, we’ve got you covered.

Keep reading to find out everything you need to know about bed coverings.

Bed Sheets

What are they?

These are the basics for any bedroom. Bed sheets are coverings designed to fit over a mattress or layered over other sheets. The three main types of sheets are flat sheets, fitted sheets, and top sheets.

What do they do?

Bed sheets are not only used for decorative purposes, but also as a protective barrier between your body and your mattress. They are made for added warmth and to keep your bed cleaner for longer. The flat sheet is the first covering over the fitted sheet, which has elastic to wrap around the edges of the mattress. A top sheet is also used for an extra polished presentation.

Our silky smooth Cosy House Everyday Bed Sheets are 100% polyester and come in a set with one flat sheet, one fitted sheet, and two pillowcases. With ultra-tight knit and premium-grade materials, these sheets are breathable, hypoallergenic, and ensure superior softness and cleanliness.

Cosy Luxury Bed Sheets are also a great option due to the bamboo viscose & polyester blend that regulates body temperature and cools you throughout the night. Cosy House Wavy Elegant Bed Sheets can add sophistication and a crisp, tailored look to your bedroom with their matte-&-shine pattern. If you need sheets that are taut and secure, our Everyday Fitted Sheets as well as our Cosy House Luxury Sheets fit mattresses up to 16” deep and stay in place all night due to an elasticized design for each corner.

Pillows and Pillowcases

What are they?

Pillows are a staple in any bedroom. Pillows can come in many varieties, like throw pillows, body pillows, decorative pillows, and more.

Pillowcases are the protective covers for your pillows, made to slip over your pillows with ease and stay secure throughout the night.

What do they do?

Pillows offer support for your body during sleep for extra comfort. They can even help ease stress on your back, neck, and head during rest.

Pillowcases act as an extra layer of protection for your pillows from common non-living household allergens, body oils, stains, and odors.

A Cosy House Luxury Pillow is a great option for your bedroom if you are looking for something soft and super supportive. These pillows have an adjustable memory foam filling to give instant pressure relief to your head and neck. These pillows can also be paired with our Luxury Pillowcase, which has a light, airy feel plus moisture-wicking properties, and it’s machine washable!

If you are looking for even more support and amenity, our Cosy Luxury Body Pillow might be the thing for you. This pillow is encased in a soft, hypoallergenic bamboo viscose blend case and resists common household non-living allergens, which can benefit your sleep quality and your skin.

Comforters

What are they?

Ever wondered what it’s like to sleep on a cloud? Then you’ll appreciate the artistry that is a comforter. Comforters are lofty and big, like a fluffy cloud. They are almost like duvets or duvet covers, however, comforters are large one-piece covers with a soft, plush, insulated filling.

What do they do?

Comforters allow for an even more snug and restful sleeping experience. They are perfect for those frigid winter months, but a Cosy House Down Alternative Comforter made with bamboo viscose fabric is perfect for both summer AND winter. It can adapt to body temperature and circulate airflow between your bed sheets so you won’t get night sweats.

Blankets

What are they?

Blankets can come in all shapes and sizes. Throws are small, decorative blankets used for an extra bit of ‘pop.’ Bed scarves (also called bed runners) are a covering that spans the entire width of the foot of the bed. Weighted blankets and fleece blankets are other kinds of coverings that have become popular over recent years.

What do they do?

Blankets should be like being wrapped in a warm embrace and should also be gentle on your skin. They provide warmth and coziness during sleep. Our Cosy Luxury Weighted Blanket has deep-touch pressure stimulation technology created by thousands of tiny glass beads, distributed throughout the fabric, that has been proven to reduce feelings of anxiety and depression while also promoting tranquility.
If you are looking for a great throw option or basic decorative blankets, an Everyday Fleece Blanket from Cosy House is extra plush due to the microfiber polyester fabric and comes in up to nine different colors to match your bedroom’s aesthetic. You won’t need to worry about your feet freezing, either, because our Everyday Fleece Blanket is generously sized for superior cuddliness.

Coverlets

What are they?

A coverlet is a bed covering smaller than a bedspread, designed to cover the top of your bed and to hang past the boxsprings. It is one layer of fabric woven like a quilt. Don’t confuse a coverlet for a blanket cover, though — blanket covers are decorative coverings that you can layer over a blanket for extra protection from stains and odors.

What do they do?

Coverlets are great for layering and acting as an “in-between” for your duvet cover and your sheets. You can tuck in the coverlet or leave it untucked. You can layer it over a flat sheet or over a blanket. They can provide an extra layer of warmth, too. For a more minimal look, you can keep your coverlet as a stand-alone piece. Coverlets are versatile and flexible to whatever style your heart desires.

Bedspreads

What are they?

Think of your bed like a fancy, cake entrée. The bedspread is the frosting garnish. Your hands are the icing spatulas. A bedspread is a lightweight cover that envelops your entire bed. It usually comes up over the pillows and also touches the floor. Some bedspreads have a special pocket to hold a bedspread filler or top-of-bed insert for a lusher look and additional warmth.

What do they do?

Bedspreads can help you to make your bed in one easy motion, as they hide everything underneath. All you have to do is throw the spread over the bed, and voilà — you're done! Bedspreads can be used in a lot of different ways as an ornamental extension of your bed.

Duvet Covers

What are they?

The Northern spiny softshell turtle has a shell that is soft and supple. Inside the shell, is the equally soft (and very cute) turtle. A duvet cover is like the cozy shell around the softshell turtle, and the duvet is like the turtle that sits comfortably inside.

Duvet covers can be elegant and plush, or a simple solid color like the shell of a turtle. Unlike comforters, which are a single piece of bedding, duvet covers need two separate pieces — the fluffy (cute) insert and the soft (protective) cover.

What do they do?

Duvet covers can be used with duvet inserts or placed over your comforter  for some extra eye-catching decoration. They may also be layered over a quilt or blanket for more snuggly warmth all night long, folded at the foot of the bed, or pulled all the way up. A duvet cover is rarely ever tucked in, as it hangs down the sides of the bed and covers the box spring.
Our Cosy Luxury Duvet Cover Set comes with a duvet cover and two pillow shams. It’s crafted with a hypoallergenic blend of bamboo viscose and polyester, and all you have to do is slip the cover over your duvet insert and then zip it closed (the zipper is hidden beneath a small flap, so your bed will look as good as it feels).

Bed Skirts

What are they?

Yes, these are like skirts for your bed. Bed skirts act as a covering that is placed between the mattress and the boxsprings. They hang down against the sides of the bed and touch the floor. They also can have decorative trim or unique stitching for extra aesthetic.

What does it do?

Bed skirts are used to create a sleek, finished look and to fill the gap between your bed frame and the floor. They hide the unseemly bits of the bottom of your bed. For those fashion-conscious people out there, you can literally dress up your bed how you please — compliment the color palette of your comforter or quilt with a bed skirt to match your bed’s whole outfit.
Cosy House’s Everyday Pleated Bed Skirts are three-sided with double brushed microfiber fabric and a classic-meets-contemporary corner pleat design. The 14” full drop can conceal under-bed storage, your bed’s box springs, or give the room a tidy, neat look.

Mattress Protectors

What are they?

Your mattress needs a little extra TLC, too. You can give your mattress the support it needs with a mattress protector. Mattress protectors are like fitted sheets that sit between the bed sheets and the mattress. They are the very first layer before any other bed coverings.

What do they do?

Mattress protectors are great for extending the life of your mattress. They act as a barrier against common household non-living allergens, sweat, body oils, spills, and stains. Your mattress works hard to give you cushioned comfort and support. Your mattress is your sleeping advocate! A mattress protector is perfect for keeping your sleep buddy safe long-term.

If you want that extra security for your mattress, our  Waterproof Mattress Protector is the way to go. It comes in over six different sizes, from crib/toddler to California King. It’s fully-cinched, with a fitted sheet style, to fit any mattress type, and noise-free for a peaceful snooze every night.
